Mediterranea - 31/10/2021 at 2pm

Mediterranea (15):  This remarkably timely, eye-opening look at an all-too-real issue charts the death-defying struggle of African migrants as they risk everything to start a new life in Europe. Ayiva and Abas are close friends from Burkina Faso determined to make it to Italy in order to find work and provide for their families back home. 
 

The screening will also be enhanced with Regional Film Archive curated with the help of the Midlands Archive of Central England The archive is a complementary piece that documents the tales of Birmingham resident responding to immigration in 1970 and making their lives within the UK. 



White Riot - 31/10/2021 at 4pm

Rubeka Khans outstanding documentary documents the UK music scenes journey to support diverse Britain and champion multi culturalism is a must watch. Vivid, relevant and with great music. An essential watch that is enhanced.

 

The film will also feature heritage footage of Birmingham multicultural festival music festival circa 1979, which took place at the venue this event is screened



After Love(PG) - 31/10/2021 at 7pm


After Love has the agony of a domestic tragedy and the tension of a Hitchcock thriller. Mary herself is the suspense; she is the ticking bomb who could explode at any time. Examining the life of an inter-racial marriage, Immigration and ideas that explores these themes with humanity. The screening will be enhanced with regional archive film footage from MACE supporting and interviewing brummies’ reaction to immigrants arriving in the early 60s


Hidden Histories Archive Shorts Q & A - 06/11/2021 at 2pm
 

A collection of short that make up one amazing feature, from twenty visionary filmmakers, offering a unique portrait of our nation today.

 

The screening will be enhanced feature filmmakers from diverse and immigrant families, some who feature in the film talking about their experience as children of Empire and sharing their stories as second and first generation immigrants who make films. An evening not to be missed.

 

Heritage footage of vox pops of Birmingham residents in 1969 will also be screened discussing various view of what is it to be British.

The Warrior Queen of Jhansi - 25/11/2021 at 6pm

​

New and acclaimed film charting a tale of female empowerment as the tale of “The Queen of Jhansi” who led a rebellion against the East India Company in India. Staring an international cast the film will have its UK premier as part of the festival.

 

The film will be complemented by challenging perceptions about women will be enhanced with regional archive footage about Birmingham first non-white women’s community group and footage from Independent cinema Office highlighting footage of empire with British Indian Army Soldiers in the UK 1912.
